THE CHOICE OF WISDOM; OR, THE SAVIOUR'S RESPONSE TO MAN'S ANXIETY. Chat. D. BY REV. CANON BELL, D.D. Author of "Night Scenes of the Bible," "Hills that bring Peace," etc. BI AUC FR2 London: BODLEIANA ELLIOT STOCK, 62, PATERNOSTER ROW. 141. n. 104. CHAPTER I. THE WISE CHOICE. "Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”JOSH. xxiv. 15. HERE is a story in classic fable of the young Hercules being wooed by Virtue and Pleasure, each seeking to gain his allegiance. Virtue, with calm and serene face, sought to win him to her service by setting before him the beauty and nobility of purity and goodness and truth. She did not hide from him that she required the stern discipline of self-denial; but she also declared the grace and the loveliness of being conqueror over the lower nature, of being passion's master, not its slave. On the other hand, Pleasure sought to win the youth by her flattering promises of earthly delights and joys. Appealing to the desire. |
