§ 166 In this section the awkward literary style, the peculiar themes and the prominence of the Levites, the porters, the singers, the temple servants and the children of Solomon's servants, who figure in the Chronicler's other writings, are all in evidence. He has introduced practically the same list in I Chr. 94-17. It is probable that it largely originated with him. It is instructive chiefly as it illustrates the organization of the community which gathered about the temple in the days of the Chronicler and in the half-century immediately preceding. 116 Evidently this verse was transposed by mistake.

§ 167 The difficulties of this section are baffling. In 1-6 the names, which have already been assigned by the Chronicler in 102-5 to the days of Ezra, are connected with the return under Zerubbabel. These again recur in 12-21 with many variations; but there they are assigned to the generation immediately following the return under Cyrus. In 10, 11 the Chronicler gives what appears to be an authentic list of the high-priests of the Persian period. It is probable that these verses and also the names of the Levites were derived from the Book of the Chronicles to which he refers in 23. Otherwise the rest of the section seems to be from the editor.
