Resolved, by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, That the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives be, and they are hereby authorized to adjourn their respective Houses on Monday the second day of April next.

The said resolution was read, and ordered to lie on the table.

Mr. Poindexter presented a petition of Alexander Maccullagh, of the Mississippi territory, praying, for the reasons therein set forth, to be confirmed in his title to several tracts of land situated in said territory, derived from the British government of West Florida.

Mr. Poindexter also presented a petition of Isaac Ross and David M'Caleb, of the Mississippi territory, praying for a right of pre-emption to the lands on which they have respectively settled, being at present the property of the United States.

Ordered, That the said petitions be severally referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

On motion of Mr. Jennings, and seconded, Resolved, That the Committee on the Public Lands be, and they are hereby directed to inquire into the expediency of constituting and establishing a new district for the disposal of the United States lands in the Indiana territory, to be bounded as follews, to wit: On the east by the line dividing the sixth and seventh ranges; east by the second principal meridian; on the north by the Indian boundary line; on the west by the line dividing the seventh and eighth ranges, west of the second principal meridian; on the south by the river Ohio.

On motion of Mr. Love,

Ordered, That the committee of the whole House be discharged from the consideration of the bill to amend the charter of Alexandria, and that the committee of the whole House be also discharged from the consideration of the bill to amend the act, entitled

"An act for the establishment of a turnpike company in the county of Alexandria, in the district of Columbia."

On motion of Mr. Southard, and seconded,

Resolved, That the committee to whom was referred so much of the President's message as relates to the organization of the militia of the United States, be instructed to inquire whether any, and if any, what alterations or amendments are necessary in the act or acts of Congress relative to exemption from militia duty, and which require annual returns of the enrolled militia in the respective states to be made to the President of the United States, and that the committee have leave to report by bill or otherwise.

Mr. Johnson, from the Committee of Claims, presented a bill for the relief of Elizabeth Hamilton, which was received, and read the first time.

On motion,

The said bill was read the second time, and committed to a committee of the whole House, to-mor

row.

Mr. Johnson, from the same committee, to whom was committed the bill from the Senate, entitled "An act for the relief of Charles Minifie," reported, that the committee had, according to order, had the said bill under consideration, and directed him to report the same to the House without amendment.

Mr. Mumford presented a petition of Eugene de Leitzendorfer, stating that at the solicitation of general Eaton he relinquished in the year one thousand eight hundred and four, his command as chief engi neer and chief of the staff and director of the artil. lery of the Turkish army in Egypt, for the purpose of assisting that officer in his military operations against Tripoli, in consequence of which he has been subjected to many hardships and losses, and having at length arrived in America, he finds himself destitute of the means of subsistence in the midst of plenty, and soliciting such pecuniary aid from Congress as

will enable him to subsist until he can acquire a knowledge of the American language.

Odered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee of Claims.

The House resumed the consideration of the unfinished business of yesterday, to wit:

The consideration of the amendments reported by the committee of the whole House, to the bill autho rizing a detachment from the militia of the United States: When,

A motion was made by Mr. Root, and seconded, to amend the report of the committee of the whole House, by striking out the ninth section of the bill, for the purpose of inserting, in lieu thereof, another

section.

And the question being taken thereon,

It was determined in the negative.

The question then recurred on concurring with the committee of the whole House in their said amendments,

And the same being taken,

It was resolved in the affirmative.

The said bill being then further amended at the Clerk's table,

A motion was made by Mr. Van Horn, and seconded, to amend the same by striking out in the eighth line of the fourth section, the words "beyond

sca."

And the question being taken thereon,

It was determined in the negative,
