The Speaker laid before the House, a letter from the Secretary of the Treasury, transmitting two statements of the importations in American and foreign vessels, from the first of October, one thousand eight hundred and seven, to the thirtieth of September, one thousand eight hundred and eight, which were read and ordered to lie on the tables The Speaker also laid before the House, a letter from the Secretary of the Navy, transmitting a statement of the expenditure and application of monies drawn from the Treasury, btween the fourth of March and the thirtieth of September last, which were read and ordered to lie on the table. The Speaker also laid before the House, a letter from the Secretary of War, transmitting a statement of the expenditure of the monies appropriated for the contingent expenses of the military establishment for the year one thousand eight hundred and nine, which were read and ordered to lie on the table. The Speaker also laid before the House, another letter from the Secretary of War, transmitting a statement of the expenditure and application of monies drawn from the Treasury between the fourth of March and thirtieth of September last, which were read and ordered to lie on the table. Mr. Lewis presented a petition of Mary Piercy, widow and sole representative of Henry Piercy, deceased, praying to be allowed such quantity of land as her said husband was intitled to in consideration of services rendered by him as a lieutenant in the revolutionary army. Smith presented a petition of Thomas Wilson, of Erie county, state of Pennsylvania, praying to be discharged from confinement in jail, at the suits of the United States, on account of ability to execute a contract for supplying the troops of the United States with rations. Ordered, That the said petition be referred to Mr. S. Smith, Mr. Franklin and Mr. Stedman, with instruction to examine the matter thereof, and report the same with their opinion thereon to the House. Mr. Poydras presented a petition of the board of directors of the Orleans navigation company, praying for the erection of a light house on Lake Pontchar train at the mouth of the Bayou St. John. On motion of Mr. Van Horn, Ordered, That the petition of John Holker, presented on the sixth of January, one thousand eight hundred and eight, be referred to the Committee of Claims. Mr. Morrow, from the Committee on the Public Lands, made a report on the petition of Joab Garret, referred to them on the twelfth ultimo, which was read at the Clerk's table and the resolutions therein contained agreed to as follow; "Resolved, That Joab Garret be permitted to withdraw his entry from the North West quarter of section number two, in township number seven, of range number seven, in the Vincennes district, and the money paid by him on the said purchase be placed to his credit on any entry he shall or may have made in the same district." ་་ Resolved, That from and after the first day of June next, any person making application to the register of any of the land offices of the United States for the purchase of a tract of land, shall produce to him a memorandum in writing, stating the number of the section, half section or quarter, as the case may |
