After the transfers to town and private account, and the removals from the several Institutions named, had been made, there remained in the Institutions, September 30, 1897, 1,495 persons, mostly classed as insane, to be supported at the expense of the Commonwealth, as follows: State Asylum for Insane Criminals (State Farm), Hospital Cottages for Children, 92 178 122 120 47 198 107 290 206 66 56 13 1,495 Of the 2,443 removed, 293 were insane. Of the latter, 101 were sent to other states, and 192 to other countries. Of those removed to other states, 15 were sent to Maine, 9 to New Hampshire, 4 to Vermont, 11 to Rhode Island, 10 to Connecticut, 29 to New York, 5 to New Jersey, 6 to Pennsylvania, 3 to Maryland, 2 to Virginia, 1 to Illinois, 4 to Washington, D. C., 2 to Ohio. Of those removed to other countries, 9 were sent to New Brunswick, 10 to Nova Scotia, 8 to Prince Edward Island, 2 to Newfoundland, 28 to Canada, 15 to England, 51 to Ireland, 4 to Scotland, 1 to Finland, 28 to Sweden, 9 to Italy, 11 to Russia, 1 to Holland, 5 to Austria, 5 to Germany, 1 to West Indies, 1 to Azores, 3 to Armenia. . During the ten years last past 2,460 of the insane inmates of our Hospitals and Asylums were removed from the State, and the Commonwealth relieved from the expense of their further maintenance. Of this amount $45,395.78 was for inmates of the State Lunatic Hospitals, $6,702.85 for inmates of the Massachusetts Hospital for Dipsomaniacs and Inebriates, $1,913.71 for inmates of the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded, $32,170.18 for inmates of the State Almshouse, $17,257.02 for inmates of the State Farm, $61.75 for inmates of the Hospital Cottages for Children.
