Approval of the following estimates of the Trustees of the State Almshouse and State Farm for the year 1898, viz., for salaries and expenses at the State Almshouse, $153,500; for salaries and expenses at the State Farm, $137,000. Approval of the following estimates of the Trustees of the Lyman and Industrial Schools for the year 1898, viz., for salaries and expenses at the State Industrial School, $32,525; for education of girls by towns, $125; for building a cow barn, $5,500; for lighting apparatus, $6,500; for salaries and expenses at the Lyman School, $62,475; for education of boys by towns, $350; for visitation expenses, $6,800. Disapproval of the estimates of $1,500 for boarding girls and $3,000 for boarding boys. Disapproval of the estimate of $25,000 for building a school-house at the Lyman School, the Board being of the opinion that such a building would involve a serious departure from the established cottage system of the Institution. Approval of the following estimates of the Trustees of Westborough Insane Hospital: for purchase of land authorized by Acts of 1897, Chapter 276, $4,443.31; for furnishing, fitting up, and painting interior of new building for acute cases, $12,000. Approval of the following estimates of the Trustees of Northampton Lunatic Hospital: for repairs and improvements in administration building, $35,000; for repairs and improvements in basement, $5,000; for addition to south wing, etc., $3,500; for equipment of laboratory, $750; for pumping plant and addition to electric plant, $2,000. Regarding the following estimates of the Trustees of Danvers Lunatic Hospital, viz., for furnishing new cottage for female nurses, $2,500; for laying tile or asphalt floors in bath-rooms, $1,500; for land for sewage plant and expenses, $2,550, the Board is of the opinion that the expenses in question should be paid from the Hospital surplus. Approval of the estimate of the Trustees of Worcester Lunatic Hospital of $25,000 for a nurses' home. Regarding the estimate of the same Trustees of $60,000 for building an addition to the hospital to contain a new kitchen and rooms for outside help, the Board approves of the erection of such a building at a moderate expense. Approval of the estimate of the Trustees of Taunton Lunatic Hospital of $2,000 for repairs and improvements in the west middle wing. Approval of the estimate of the Trustees of Medfield Insane Asylum of $25,000 for current expenses above income. Regarding the estimate of the same Trustees of $15,000 for machine and carpenter shop, etc., the Board approves of an appropriation of $5,000 for this purpose. Voted, That the Board recommend the passage of a law requiring the Trustees of the Lyman and Industrial Schools, and the Trustees of the State Almshouse and the State Farm, to furnish the State Board of Lunacy and Charity with copies of their annual estimates for the expenses of said Institutions on or before the fifteenth day of November of each year; and also requiring the Trustees of the several State Hospitals and Asylums for the Insane to furnish the Board with copies of their estimates for the extraordinary expenses of said Institutions on or before the fifteenth day of November of each year.
