AN ACT

To annul the marriage contract of Eliphalet Thompson with Phebe his wife.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Rep resentatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same: That the marriage contract entered into by and Marriage con- between Eliphalet Thompson and Phebe Thompson his wife, tract annulled be and the same is hereby annulled and made void, and the parties released and discharged from the said contract and from all the legal duties and obligations arising therefrom as fully, effectually, and absolutely, as if they had never been joined in marriage: Provided, That nothing herein contained shall be construed to render illegitimate the child or children of said marriage.

We do hereby certify that the bill entitled "an act to annul the marriage contract of Eliphalet Thompson with Phebe his wife," was presented to the Governor on Monday the fifteenth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and forty-one, and was not returned within ten days, (Sundays excepted) after it had been presented to him. Wherefore it has agreeably to the constitution of this commonwealth, become a law, in like manner as if he had signed it.

AN ACT

Supplementary to the various Acts relating to Tavern Licenses.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Rep resentatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority

of the same, "That every person intending to apply for a tav- Notice of inern license in any city or county of this Commonwealth, from tention to apand after the first day of April next, shall give public notice of ply for license the same, by at least three publications in two newspapers, how given where the application is made in any of the cities, and in one, where the application is made in any of the counties of this Commonwealth, (if so many there be in said city or county, or if there be no newspaper published, then by printed handbills, to be posted throughout the township in six of the most public places, of which fact an affidavit, together with a copy of the printed notices, shall be attached to the application,) which publication shall be made nearest the place where such tavern is intended to be kept, and shall embrace the certificate required by the fourth section of the act passed on the eleventh of March, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four, entitled "An act relating to inns and taverns, and so forth," the last of which publications, shall be at least ten days before the first day of the term of the court, to which the application shall be made.

SECTION 2. That the price of a license to keep an inn or Gradation tavern, shall be as follows, viz: ten dollars for one year, in price of licen all cases where the adjusted valuation of the yearly rental of ses how made the house, and the property occupied, or to be occupied, for that purpose, shall not exceed one hundred dollars; in all cases exceeding one hundred dollars, and not above two hundred dollars, fifteen dollars; in all other cases, the sum of fifteen dollars, and the additional sum of four per cent. on the rental above one hundred dollars. And so much of the tenth section of the act of eleventh of March, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four, as is supplied by this act, is hereby repealed.

SECTION 4. If any person shall be convicted under the provisions of this act, or the act to which this is a supplement, of retailing vinous or spiritous liquors, by less measure than one quart, without license, such person shall be fined in a sum not less than twenty, nor more than one hundred, dollars.

AN ACT

To extend the Charter of the Northampton Bank.

SECTION 1. Be it enected by the Senate and House of Rep resentatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Gen· eral Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the charter of the Northampton Bank shall be, and the same is hereby continued and extended for the term of ten years, from the expiration of the present charter, subject to all the provisions now imposed upon the said bank, by existing laws of this Commonwealth, and also subject to such further provision as the legislature may hereafter think proper to enact, for the regulation of banking institutions.

SECTION 2. That the legislature hereby reserves the power to alter, revoke, or annul the charter of said bank, whenever,

in their opinion, it may be injurious to the citizens of the Commonwealth; in such manner, however, that no injustice shall be done to the corporators thereof.

AN ACT

To provide for the erection of a House for the Employment and Support of the Poor of the county of Bedford.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That Job Mann, Peter Schell, George Geller, John T. Vickroy, Abraham Bennet, Joseph Barkman, John Nichum, Simon Stuckey, junior, John F. Davis, Thomas Morton, junior, John E. Knable, Esquire, Henry Hoke, Benjamin Wollet, James Dixon, George B. Kay, Martin Loy, John Fickes, and Thomas Blackburne, of Thomas, be and hereby are appointed commissioners, whose duty it shall be, or a majority of them, on or before the first day of January, Anno Domini eighteen hundred and forty-two, to determine upon and purchase Their duties such real estate as they shall deem necessary for the accommodation of the poor of Bedford county, and it shall be lawful for said commissioners or a majority of them, to take conveyances therefor in the name and for the use of the corporation mentioned in the third section of this act, and they shall certify their proceedings therein under their hands and their proceed- seals to the clerk of the court of quarter sessions of Bedford ings to court county, to be filed in his office; and at the next general election the qualified electors shall elect three reputable citizens of the said county, to be directors of the poor and of the house directors and of employment for the county of Bedford for the ensuing year; proceedings and the judges of the election of said county, shall immediately on receiving the returns from the several election districts, and casting up the number of votes therein, or within three days thereafter, certify under their hands and seals the names of the persons so elected directors, to the clerk of the court of quarter sessions of the said county, who shall file the said certificate in his office, and forthwith give notice in writing to the said directors of their being elected; and the said directors shall meet at the court house in the said county, on the first Monday of November next ensuing their election, and divide themClassification selves by lot into three classes, the place of the first to be vaof directors cated at the expiration of the first year, of the second at the expiration of the second year, of the third at the expiration of the third year, so that those who shall be chosen after the first election, and in the mode above described may serve for three years, and one third may be chosen annually.
