378 THE RUsso-JAPANESE war.

|the Straits of Corea. In the three days' battle which followed the Russian fleet was |Tractically annihilated. These vessels were sunk: , Kniaz Suraross, the flagship: | Alexander III., Borodino, Osliabya, Navarin and Sissoi Veliky, all battleships; Drmitri | Donshoi, Admiral Natshirnoff, Vladimir Monomach, armored cruisers; Admiral Oushakoff, coast defense vessel; Izumrud and Svetlana, protected cruisers. These vessels were captured: , Nicolai I, and Orel, battleships; Admiral Apraxin and Admiral | Seniarin, coast defense vessels. The protected cruisers Zemtchug, Aurora, and Oleg | reached Manila, and the Almez with two destroyers got to Vladivostok. The Con|| Verted Cruiser Smolensk escaped to Wusung, China. Admiral Rojestvensky and about is 8,000 officers and men were made prisoners. Foussia's sea power was virtually ex| tinguished. The Japanese land operations began with the occupation of Corea. ... No resistance Was offered by the Coreans, or by the Russians, who held the line of the Yalu River weakly, with a few advance posts beyond it. On the approach of Hand io Spring a Japanese army under General Kuroki moved north to sorce Operations, a passage across the Yalu. After some skirmishing in front of Antung the Japanese (April 29-May 2) crossed the river higher up and turned the Russian left flank, General Sassulitch, who commanded the Russian forces, failed to extricate his left promptly and suffered some losses in guns and men on the retreat. The relative strength of the Japanese and Russians at the Yalu Was about 40,000 or 50,000 to 10,000 or 12,000. The Russian losses were probably 2,000 and the Japanese 1,000 to 1,500. General PCuropatkin, the commander in chief of the Russian forces, reached Moukden on March 27. He gave his first attention to provisioning and equipping Port Arthur for a siege. He then made Liao-Yang his first base, expecting to meet a Japanese advance from three directions—from the Yalu, from the coast north and east of Port Arthur and from New-Chwang.

While IKuroks, after May 2, worked slowly through the mountainous region between the Yalu and Liao-Yang, the Japanese made preparations to support him from the south and also to isolate and invest Port Arthur. The railroad into the Regent's Sword Peninsula was cut about the middle of May, and by May 26 Japanese troops under General Oku had obtained a footing across the peninsula, having WOn o: battles of Kin-Chow and Nan–Shan. The Port Arthur garrison under General Stoessel retired to the outer perimeter of the city’s defences. On May 30 the Japanese occupied Dalny, which had been abandoned by the Russians,

Early in June Ceneral Kuropatkin ordered a reconnoissance in sorce toward, Port Arthur by a column under General Stackelberg. General Oku moved north and the two armies met on June 14–15 at Wasangkao and Telissu, on the line of the railroad, General Stackelberg was outnumbered and outman Ceuvred, and was forced to retire toward Liao-Yang, The losses on each side were probably about 6,000,or 8,000, . New- || Chwang was abandoned by the Russians on July 25 and was immediately occupied by | the Japanese as an additional base. - : During July and August Kuroki continued to press slowly forward from the east || and armies under Generals Oku and Nodzu pushed north, marching parallel with the is Manchurian rail Way. General kuropatkin held extended positions in a semicircle { from northeast to southwest of Liao-Yang, and slowly drew in his forces as the Japanese advanced. Between August 25 and September 5, the Japanese forces at || tasked him in his main position about his base. Oku and Nodzu making fierce frontal || assaults from the south, while Kuroki engaged in a Wide turning movement north to || encircle Kuropatkin and cut his line of retreat , to Moukden. To meet this turning || movement Kuropatkin withdrew the bulk of his army from Liao-Yang across the Tai Tse River, intending to isolate and crush Kuroki. But his attack on. Kuroki || failed, and he then decided to evacuate Liao-Yang and to retire toward Moukden, || The fighting had lasted five days and was exceedingly, bloody. . The Japanese attacked || intrenched positions and suffered heavy losses. Though attaining their tactical Object, they paid an excessive cost for it; for the result was in every respect indecisive. } The japanese losses , before, Liao-Yang were probably, nearly 30,000. The Russians | probably lost something under 20,000. The Japanese had about 200,000 men in the field to perhaps 165,000 Russians. * | General Kuropatkin fell back to Moukden and there reinforced and rested his army. H On October 4 he began a forward, offensive mgyement, which resulted, in another voek ióng struggle, from October 12, to, October 19, on the line, of the, Shake River. The results of the fighting were again highly indecisive, both sldes claiming the ad| Wantage. Each probably lost about 25,000 men. . . . . of siege of Port Arthur made slow progress. The Japanese resorted to storming || tactics at the outset, but suffered staggering losses and finally settled down to an # inch-by-inch investment. ... Between May 30 and November 30 the

Siege of besiegers took many outlying , Russian positions, . but they Were || Port Arthur. never able to drive an attack home. It is estimated . that the japanese sacrifleed 30,000 to 40,000 men before Port Arthur in

on thS. * thosło, to take the fortress by assault, the Japanese persistently broke # down one by one its outer lines of defence. Their efforts and sagofios were in, a ji measure rewarded when early in December they got possession of 203-Metre Hill, the # highest point to the westwará of the city, from which guns could reach nearly every is part of the inner harbor, Mounting, heavy naval, artillery on, this, hill the Japano || directed their fire on the disabled,Russian warships anchored in the inner port. The Fortress soon ceased to be defensiolo and on January 1, 1905, General Stoessel sur-H ::miered. He had a garrison of 32.20(...With 15,000 sick and wounded. From January 25 to 29 General Grippenberg assaulted the Japanese left on the Hun River, but the effort was fruitless. A rmonth later Oyama began a forward and
