JUPITER ET ANTIOPE.

Jupiter, dont les métamorphoses ont été si fréquentes et si variées pour séduire différentes mortelles, prit la forme d'un satyre afin de plaire à la belle Antiope, fille de Nyciéus et de Polyxe. On doit donc par là comprendre que c'est un usage ridicule de donner, comme on le fait si souvent, un caractère brut à ces êtres imaginaires. Aussi Titien, dans sa composition, a laissé au satyre une physionomie agréable et pleine de tendresse. Il a seulement donné un peu d'allongement aux oreilles; et, en couvrant de poils la partie inférieure du corps, il a laissé aux jambes la forme humaine. Le corps du satyre est d'une couleur vigoureuse, ce qui fait ressortir davantage la blancheur éclatante de la belle Antiope.

Le fond de ce tableau est un paysage d'un ton chaud, les arbres par lesquels le groupe est abrité procurent un très-bon effet de lumière.

JUPITER AND ANTIOPE.

Jupiter whose metamorphoses were so frequent, and so various in order to seduce mortals, took the form of a Satyr, to render himself agreeable to the beautiful Antiope. That is intended to inform us, that the custom is ridiculous of giving a character of brutes, to these imaginary beings.

Titian in his composition has bestowed an agreeable countenance on Jupiter, and one full of tenderness, He has merely lengthened the ears a little, and covering with hair the lower part of the body, has distinguished the legs by those of the human form. The body of the Satyr, is of a vigorous colour, which heightens still more the dazzling whiteness of the beautiful Antiope.

The back ground of this picture is of a warm tone, and the trees by which the group is shaded, have a good effect.
