La persécution de l'empereur Sévère, dans le commencement du Ille. siècle, ayant anéanti ou dispersé les ministres de la religion chrétienne dans les Gaules, le pape envoya sept évêques pour y ranimer la foi. Denis, l'un d'eux, après avoir prêché à Arles, vint continuer ses prédications jusqu'à Paris, dont il est regardé comme le premier évêque. On croit qu'il fit bâtir une église dans cette capitale, et qu'il en fonda aussi d'autres à Chartres, à Senlis et à Meaux. De nouvelles persécutions étant venu de nouveau affliger l'église, saint Denis fut décapité avec Rustique et Éleuthère, à ce que l'on croit dans un village près de Paris; mais on doute que ce soit celui qui depuis porta le nom de Saint-Denis. Joseph-Marie Vien ayant été chargé de peindre la prédication de ce saint évêque, pour décorer une des chapelles latérales de l'église Saint-Roch, il s'en acquitta d'une manière remarquable et chercha à sortir de la mauvaise route que suivaient alors tous les peintres de l'école française. Lorsque ce tableau fut exposé au salon de 1774, il fut accueilli par le public, et détermina bientôt le changement de goût que Vincent, Regnaud et David opérèrent ensuite complétement, en ramenant la peinture à l'étude de l'antique, ainsi qu'à celle de la nature. Ce tableau, qui fait honneur à l'école française n'avait encore été gravé que par M. C. Normand, pour les Annales du Musée, publiées par Landon. The persecution of the Emperor Severus, in [the beginning of the third century, having annihilated, or dispersed the ministers of the Christian religion in Gaul, the Pope sent seven Bishops to revive the faith. Denis one of them, after having preached at Arles, continued his discourses even as far as Paris, of which place, he is considered as the first Bishop. It is supposed that he erected a church in this capital; and that he also founded one at Chartres, at Senlis, and at Meaux. New persecutions again afflicting the church, Saint Denis was beheaded, with Rustique and Eleuthere, as is thought in a village near Paris, but it is doubtful whether it be that which bears the name of Saint Denis. Joseph Maria Vien, having been directed to paint the preaching of this holy Bishop, to ornament one of the side chapels of the church of Saint Roch, he acquitted himself of the task in an extraordinary manner, endeavouring to avoid the bad style followed at that time by the French school. When this picture was exibited at the salon in 1774, it was well received by the public, and quiekly determined the change that Vincent, Regnaud, and David afterwards completely effected, in leading back painting to the study of the antique, as well as that of nature. This picture which does honour to the French School, has only been engraved by M. C. Normand, for « the annals of the Musée » published by Landon.
