Bacchus dans sa première enfance fut confié aux nymphes du mont Nisa par Jupiter son père; et c'est Mercure qui fut chargé de leur apporter le jeune dieu au moment de sa naissance. Les anciens auteurs diffèrent de sentimens sur la situation du mont Nisa: suivant quelques géographes, dix endroits différens portent ce nom; l'un d'eux, sur la côte d'Eubée, était célèbre par ses vignes, dont la croissance était si remarquable que lorsqu'une branche était plantée le matin, elle produisait dans la journée une grappe qui, dans la soirée même, arīivait à sa parfaite maturité. Nulle autre place assurément ne pouvait avoir de plus justes prétentions à servir de théâtre pour l'éducation du Dieu du vin. Ce sujet mythologique a inspiré au peintre Howard un tableau rempli de beautés Mercure traversant les airs tient encore dans sa chlamyde le jeune Bacchus, que les nymphes s'empressent de recevoir avec une tendresse mêlée de joie. Ce tableau a été gravé très-agréablement, pour un des almanachs que l'on publie à Londres avec tant de recherche. THE INFANT BACCHUS, BROUGHT BY MERCURY TO THE NYMPHS OF NISA. THE nursing of Bacchus, during his infancy, was by his father Jupiter confided to the Nymphs of Nisa. Ancient Authors differ in describing the situation of that place; according to some Geographers there were no less than ten places known by the name of Nisa. One of these, on the coast of Euboea, was famous for its vines, which grew in so remarkable a manner, that, if a twig was planted in the ground in the morning, it immediately produced grapes, which became perfectly ripe in the evening of the same day, surely no other place could produce such incontestable claims to the nurture and education of the God of Wine. From this mythological incident the artist bas derived a hint for a very beautiful picture, representing the arrival of Mercury in the groves of Nisa, charged with the infant son of Semele, who his welcomed by the Nymphs with joy and tenderness it has been successfully engraved for one of the embellished annuals. |
