PREFACE.

The first two volumes, of this series of Documents, contained those connected with the period ante-dating the surrender of the government to the Crown in 1703, which may be termed the Proprietary Era. In this and the succeeding volume, will be found the documents connected with the Union Era, or the administrations of the Governors to whose charge was com mitted both the provinces of New York and New Jersey; and the succeeding volumes will contain those relating to the Provincial Era, or that portion of the history of New Jersey covered by the various administrations, from that of Lewis Morris, in 1738, to that of William Franklin, with which the rule of England in New Jersey closed.
