SPECIAL NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS.

WITH Part XII. (May, 1886) ended the fifth volume of the Western Antiquary, undoubtedly the most important of the series yet published. It contains over three hundred pages, a number considerably in excess of any previous volume. The volumes already published are as follows:

Vol. I.- -March, 1881, to March, 1882, 220 pages, 17 Illustrations, with Introductory Article, by W. COPELAND BORLASE, ESQ., M.P., F.S.A. (and a portrait); also a general Index to principal subjects.

Vol. II.-April, 1882, to April, 1883, 220 pages, with 26 Illustrations and copious Index. Introductory Article by J. BROOKING ROWE, ESQ., F.S.A. (and portrait of the Editor).

Vol. III.-April, 1883, to May, 1884, 264 pages, Index, and 41 Illustrations. Introductory Article by Rev W. S. LACH-SŻYRMA, M.A., F.R. HIST. SOC. (and portrait).

Vol. IV.-June, 1884, to May, 1885, 276 pages, Index, and 50 Illustrations. Introductory Article by CHARLES I. ELTON, ESQ., M.P., Author of Origins of English History.

The fifth volume contains 320 pages, besides index and illustrations; also an introductory article by H. H. Drake, M.A., Ph.D., with a portrait. But, in addition to the increase of printed matter, the editor can point, with some degree of satisfaction, to the enhanced and permanent value of this volume by reason of the special articles in almost every branch of antiquarian research, contributed by well-known writers. The various bibliographical treatises and lists by Dr. T. N. Brushfield, Rev. J. Ingle Dredge, Mr. G. C. Boase, and others, likewise form a peculiar feature of this volume, and will doubtless be welcomed by many who have an interest in the production of a Bibliotheca Devoniensis, one of the greatest of our local literary wants.

The editor, in soliciting from subscribers and contributors a continuance of their favours, would assure them of his desire to improve the journal in every possible way, and to make it worthy to rank among the best of provincial antiquarian publications. He has therefore made arrangements with his publisher for sundry improvements both in appearance and arrangement. To do this effectively, however, will necessitate some extra expense, and this, considering the smallness of the subscription hitherto charged, can only be met by making a slight increase in the price of the journal, which is much lower than the majority of such publications. He purposes therefore to make the annual subscription 75., or free by post for 8s., the index number being an extra as usual. A limited number of copies will also be printed on superior hand-made paper, with uncut edges, similar to the London Antiquary, the charge for which will be 10s. or 11S., postage included.

The editor sincerely trusts that this slight increase will not militate against the interests of the journal, but rather be the means of inducing many others to contribute to its support. He wishes to point out that during the greater part of the past year he has given several more pages per number than was originally estimated for, and that the same cause has in many instances doubled the cost of postage. Bearing these matters in mind, as well as the fact that the cost of production must necessarily be heavy, the editor relies on the good feeling and sense of justice of his friends to aid him in his endeavour to carry on the journal with a reasonable hope of making it both a literary and financial success. He therefore confidently leaves the matter in the hands of those whom he addresses.

A few sets of the Fifth Series remain on hand; price, with index and list of subscribers, bound, 15s. Special terms to new subscribers taking back volumes.

Vol. I. has long been out of print. Vol. II. is very scarce. Of Vols. III. and IV., only a few sets remain. The editor will be pleased to quote present prices for any of those in stock for any subscriber wishing to complete sets. He is also prepared to receive loose numbers for binding in the approved covers, as usual, at 2s. 6d. per volume.

There will shortly be issued a prospectus containing a full list of articles promised for the current volume. These articles will be fairly representative of the history, literature, and legendary lore of the counties of Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset, included in the scope of the journal, and will, moreover, be written by gentlemen well acquainted with the subjects on which they treat. From this list it will appear that the work from a literary point of view is progressing, and is rapidly gaining in favour in many directions where formerly it was unknown.

Forms of Order to be filled up by new subscribers, or by old subscribers who may desire to receive the better edition on superior paper, will be sent on application to the Editor as below.

In accordance with previous notice, the editor continues to send the Sixth Series to all former subscribers who have not already intimated their wish to discontinue.
