A communication from the Secretary of War, in relation to building quarters for troops at Fort Leavenworth, Kans.

To the Senate and House of Representatives:

I transmit herewith, for the consideration of Congress, a communication from the Secretary of War, dated the 18th instant, inclosing plans and estimates for a brick building for the post of Fort Leavenworth, Kans., to contain quarters for two companies of troops, to replace the one destroyed by fire on the 1st of February last, and recommending an appropriation of $18,745.77 in accordance with the estimates.

I have the honor to transmit herewith plans and estimates for a brick building for the post of Fort Leavenworth, Kans., to contain quarters for two companies of troops, to replace the one destroyed by fire on the 1st of February last; also the correspondence accompanying the same, and to recommend that an appropriation be made by Congress in accordance with the estimates, viz, $18,745.77.

SIR: I have the honor to submit herewith an elevation and plan of the first and second floors and detailed estimate of a building to contain quarters for two companies of troops, to replace the one destroyed by fire at this place on the 1st instant.

The cost will be $18,745.77 if built of brick with slate roof, and $12,745.77 if built of wood with shingle roof.

Respectfully forwarded to the Adjutant-General of the Army, through office of the adjutant-general Military Division of the Missouri. These plans and estimates for the construction of a barrack to replace the one recently destroyed by fire are respectfully forwarded, with the remark that in my opinion no more frame buildings should be erected at Fort Leavenworth.

Respectfully returned to the adjutant-general of the division, recommending that Congress be asked at once for the money necessary to build the quarters herein estimated for of brick, with slate roof, to replace those destroyed by fire.
