John Wilcock was born in Sheffield, England on August 4, 1927. At the age of 16, he became a cub reporter for The Sheffield Telegraph. He later worked for The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror and was an editor for British United Press before moving to Toronto, where he worked at Saturday Night magazine. He then moved to New York, where he was the first news editor of The Village Voice and wrote a column called The Village Square for a decade. From 1957 to 1959, he also edited and wrote travel articles for the New York Times. In 1965, he helped found The East Village Other, one of the nation's first underground newspapers. In 1966, he helped found the Underground Press Syndicate. He wrote many $5 a day travel books and edited books on the occult. He published Other Scenes, an underground magazine offering travel tips, poetry and social commentary. He founded Interview magazine with Andy Warhol in 1969. In 1971, he published The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol. His autobiography, Manhattan Memories, was published in 2010. He died after several strokes on September 13, 2018 at the age of 91.
