This publication is based on the sixth in the series of ILO social policy lectures, held at the University of Tokyo, Japan in December 2003. It contains four lectures which consider the evolution of work and relations at work in industrial societies, entitled: the pains and rewards of work in the 21st century; concrete meanings of labour market flexibility; the direction of social change; global markets and national employment systems.
